The Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament will today, March 16, visit Ashaiman following the military brutality.
The committee members will use the visit to ascertain firsthand information from the victims of the brutality to inform the next line of action on the matter.
This will be done in tandem with the Military High Command - the Chairman of the Committee has said.
A large number of uniformed soldiers invaded parts of Ashaiman on Tuesday, March 7, following the murder of a young soldier, Imoro Sherrif, on Saturday dawn at Ashaiman-Taifa.
Footages shared on social media show armed military personnel brutalising residents.
However, the Ghana Armed Forces has said the operation was merely a swoop in a man-hunt for some criminals and not for vengeance.
According to GAF, “the military operation, which was sanctioned by the Military High Command, was NOT to avenge the killing of the soldier but rather to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime.”
They added that their “swoop” had led to the arrest of about 184 suspects aged between 21 and 47 years old and they have since handed them over to the military police who will subsequently send them over to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further action.
But this act has been condemned by well-meaning Ghanaians inasmuch as they also condemned the killing of the military officer.
The Police have arrested six suspects in connection with the murder of the soldier.
In a detailed statement issued on Monday, the Police said after almost a week of painstaking intelligence-led operations, on March 9, it arrested suspects Safianu Musah alias Dayorgu and Ibrahim Abdul Rakib at their hideouts in Ashaiman.
The suspects were arraigned before the Ashaiman Circuit Court. But were denied bail my the court.
Prosecutor, Supt. Sylvester Asare told the court presided over by Simon Gaga that granting the accused persons bail will impede investigations.
