The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected Ghana Post Accra branch over GH¢89,000 debt owed.
This was done on Tuesday March 28, 2023, when the ECG task force entered the premises of Ghana Post.
Also, the team stopped at the Osu Police Barracks where they disconnected the power supply to three blocks in the barracks.
The disconnection was due to illegal connections done at the affected blocks.
The External Communications Manager at ECG, Madam Laila Abubakari, briefing the media said they have the mandate to disconnect such illegal connections before attending to the real issue at hand.
“Since it’s an illegal connection, we have the first right to disconnect before we deal with issues.”
Disclosing when power will be restored to the barracks, Madam Laila said until the Ghana Police Service clears up the over 12-month bill, the barracks cannot be reconnected to the power grid.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communication has cleared its debt owed to the power company. They made a payment of GH¢101,000 on Tuesday, to avoid being disconnected.
It would be recalled that the ECG on March 20, embarked on a massive disconnection exercise in their bid to recover GH¢5.7 billion debt.
ECG, therefore, asked its customers to pay up or be disconnected from the grid.
Explaining the need for the revenue mobilisation drive, the ECG's Managing Director, Samuel Mahama, said it is necessary to clear an outstanding $1 billion owed to some Independent Power Producers (IPP).
As a result, Mr Mahama stated that a halt in the exercise could be dire for the company.
Meanwhile, he has disclosed that he has received calls to stop the disconnection exercise they are embarking on to retrieve unpaid debts.
According to Samuel Dubik Mahama, the calls he received are from friends, power brokers, and politicians.
He said the request made is “can you hold off?”
The ECG boss made this disclosure in an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday.
