In most schools in developing countries, potable water and sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs are often inadequate. As part of efforts to promote positive WASH behaviors, Play Soccer Ghana, a sport for development Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) in Cape Coast is using sport and football as key tools for sustainable development to implement the Football for Hygiene project funded by Manchester City Cityzens and Xylem Inc.

The project that's funded by Manchester City Cityzens and Xylem Inc. will make hand washing facilities easily accessible. The 'Play for Fun', 'Learn for Life' (PFFLFL) manual is expected to be used in the PFFLFL sessions to teach and empower kids about proper handwashing practices.

As part of the key objectives to improve access to handwashing facilities in basic schools and also to improve knowledge on proper handwashing techniques in basic schools, some WASH items were donated to the Police Basic School in Tamale and St. Francis Basic school in Cape Coast. The items include a 3,500-liter water tank, veronica buckets, manuals on proper handwashing and other sports facilities including footballs, bibs and cones.

Presenting the items, Programmes Manager of Play Soccer Ghana, Anthony Asante Addo, entreated all children and teachers to ensure proper handwashing always especially at schools to prevent the spread of diarrhea and other related infections which tend to increase school absenteeism and affect their overall academic performance. Xylem Inc. also donated water bottles to children in the project intervention schools.
