A Political Risk Analyst has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to work on building their integrity in the public eye ahead of the 2024 elections.
Dr Theo Acheampong said both parties must move away from the debate of who did better during their time under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and find lasting solutions to the economic woes.
“Both of the parties at least on the economic front have serious issues with credibility on the macro front. In the last term, 2016, we know what happened, "dumsor" and all the other issues now we are talking about the debt restructuring, domestic exchange and the ripple effect of that and an IMF program as well,” he said.
Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews on Saturday, he explained at parties must focus on adopting policies to lessen the burden of the ordinary Ghanaian.
“And this time as well it’s affecting the middle class. Your typical middle-class people that traditionally may gravitate even towards let’s say the NPP and NDC many of them have been hit hard by this current crisis.
“So I don’t think that the debate on the substantive issues is about employment. There are deeper issues around the economy, cost of living, and the crisis that we all find ourselves in.
"And the way many of the citizens will access is what is going to change fundamentally this time round in terms of your offering, your policies, and in terms of your substance,” he told host, Evans Mensah.
He stressed that “It is no longer enough to make promises but people are going to be pining you to the wall in terms of the substance underpinning those promises and where there is actually even the fiscal space to contain it,” he added.
