Executive Director of Institute for Energy Policy and Research, Kwadwo Poku

Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Poku says the only way the government can build a resilient economy is to save money.

According to him, the current NPP administration’s overspending has led to Ghana returning to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for assistance almost immediately after its exit from the programme.

Mr Poku is however optimistic that he has the requisite expertise to bring a change in the economy.

“From 2017, when we came in and realise that Mr Mahama has taken us to the IMF and we came out of the IMF in 2018, we should have cut down on expenditure, we did not. We overspent thinking that 'look the economy is on the right track and we are expanding', we did not build the right resilient economy.

“We did not build the right shock absorbers, then covid hit, then Ukraine war hit then all the things that we have done went abay. Now I am saying that we need to build a resilient economy and the only way to do that is to save money,” he said.

Speaking on the Pulse on JoyNews, he explained that this was the reason he will focus on building the country's saving culture.

Mr Poku added that once the savings culture is fixed, Ghana will move from a poor country to one that is economically stable.

“We need to greatly save money to change the course of where we are. If you look at the IMF document it repeats the things that I have been saying, clearly, you need to cut expenditures and save money.

“The difference between a poor person and a rich person is; a poor person makes money, spends more, and keeps less. A rich person makes money saves more, and spends less,” he added.

Mr Poku said he was the best person to get the country back on track.

Mr Poku earlier on May 30, picked up a nomination form to contest against the seven individuals vying for the flagbearership position.
