The Chief Executive of Charter House, Theresa Ayoade, has recounted incidents that led to the birth of the prestigious Ghana Music Awards.
Sharing the story in a yet-to-be-aired interview on JoyNews, Mrs Ayoade said her Nigerian husband got the idea when he saw two Ghanaian artists arguing over who is the most popular at the backstage of Agoro, another TV production he came up with.
Being a sales expert with the Multimedia Group at the time as well as a creative lover, the CEO said she hopped onto the idea and that led to the creation of the country’s most reputable music award event.
“My husband started this TV programme, Agoro. He designed the programme which was quiet interesting for a Nigerian who didn’t speak the local language to design such a programme that was hugely successful.
“And Ghana Music Award was born out of Agoro, because it was on that Agoro platform that was taking musicians to various parts of the country. So on one of the shows in Kumasi he overheard Akyeame and Lord Kenya arguing over who was the most popular. So when he came back, he made that suggestion,” Mrs Ayoade recounted.
According to her, her husband was very intrigued by Ghana’s vibrant music scene due to the introduction of other genres like Hip life among others.
Thus, after he toured the country with the Agoro show, he made a suggestion to his wife for the Ghana Music Awards to be born.
“I was in that marketing space so I jumped into it and we designed it and packaged it for it to launch. So it was at that time that I resigned from The Multimedia Group – Joy FM – so that I could join him to organise it and that was when Charter House was birthed,” she narrated.
Catch Mrs Ayoade live on your screens tonight at 9 pm on JoyNews' PM: Express Personality Profile edition as she talks to Ayisha Ibrahim about her life and the ups and downs of her 24-year journey as Charter House CEO.
