A Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's candidature for flagbearship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a cover-up for the wrongs of President Akufo-Addo.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, Mustapha Gbande listed some of the wrongs as corruption, scandals, mismanagement, and incompetence.
He added that, “Dr Bawumia’s candidature is as a result of lack of conscience.”
According to him, if indeed the Vice President had a conscience, “he would know that in the history of the 4th Republic, he is the only Vice President that has been used for the wrong reasons.”
“The President himself admitted three days ago that he agrees that there are challenges but new leadership will come and resolve those challenges.
“So if you have that candidate contesting, it should be very clear that government as far as Nana Addo controls resources would do everything possible to make Dr Bawumia the elected flagbearer of the NPP,” Mr Gbande noted.
He added that if Dr Bawumia were to do some self-evaluation, he would not run in the race. However, “because he is a candidate for a cover-up, the NPP set up currently will make him the flagbearer."
His comment follows Dr Bawumia's victory in the super delegates' conference with over 68 % of votes even before the main election in November.
Political analysts have already predicted that election 2024 will be a race between Dr Bawumia and John Mahama.
When asked if the NDC is confident of winning the election, Mr Gbande stated that if Dr Bawumia becomes the flagbearer of the NPP, it will offer the NDC a better chance of winning the election in 2024.
