The former Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta, Joseph Albert Quarm popularly known as Prof. Quarm has successfully obtained a doctorate degree in Environment Science from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Joseph Albert Quarm graduated on Friday, November 24.
His thesis was titled: Artisanal gold mining in the Amansie West District of Ghana: Ecological impacts and reclamation using organic amendments.
As part of his recommendations, Dr. Quarm advocated for the use of test plants like maize to determine suitably reclaimed lands.
“Maize has a short life cycle of three months, if a mining company is supposed to reclaim its degraded mine site within a short time, maize will be the best indicator if the land has been reclaimed to the acceptable level,” he said.
He also called for extensive testing of contaminants in mining soils to determine the safety of food crops.
