Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the government’s digitalisation agenda is helping to tackle corruption and corruption-related issues in public services.

According to him, through the introduction of the Ghana card identity system services such as passport acquisition and port clearances have become seamless and corruption-free by reducing human intervention.

He was speaking at the 20^th Ghana Club 100 Awards ceremony held on Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre.

He noted that the government’s digitalisation agenda will positively impact the development of the Ghanaian economy and help support the government’s drive to provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Dr Bawumia said while he recognised the crucial role the private sector plays in driving the economy, Ghana’s overwhelming informal sector threatens to derail any gains.

He said the government’s digitalisation agenda will help formalise the informal sector and unlock the economy’s full potential.

“This is why we have been moving sturdily and we have made a lot of progress in this particular area. Of course, the anchor for the digitalization programme has been the Ghana Card that we issued," Dr Bawumia noted.

"Today, we have enrolled over a 17million people on the Ghana Card, we have linked all bank accounts to the Ghana Card, and linked all SIM cards to the Ghana Card, TIN is your Ghana Card number, NHIS number is your Ghana Card number, today we have linked the Ghana Card to the Controller and Accountant General Department payroll."

"Today we are increasing this formalisation of the economy as a result of digitalisation, we are digitalising all government services through Ghana.gov.gh and so on. All these bring transparency and that helps businesses, it makes the system clearer, it reduces corruption because you can get services without actually going to meet anybody who will demand a bribe," he said.
