President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has contested assertions by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, claiming that he has become a 'lame-duck' President after the nomination of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 Election.
Speaking at an event in Nima, Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasised that he will continue to serve as Ghana's President until January 7, 2025, as outlined by the 1992 Constitution.
Alban Bagbin, on November 21, had urged the government to collaborate with the Minority side to avoid potential stalemates, expressing concerns about loyalty shifts within the NPP following Bawumia's nomination.
Addressing these remarks, President Akufo-Addo stated, “Speaker Bagbin says I am a lame duck. Well, that is his language.
"I am still the president of the republic, and I will continue to do so until January 7, 2025. I have no doubt that the power to make decisions and to carry out policies is still firmly in my hands, and I am not going to let it go."
He added, “So I don’t know what he is talking about when he says I am a lame-duck president. I am not a lame-duck president.”
