Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC as part of its Power to Make a Difference (PMAD) initiative, has made two separate donations to the Department of Accounting, University of Ghana School (UGBS) and the Student’s Financial Aid Office, also of the University of Ghana.

The bank donated twenty 20 laptops and an amount of ¢20,000 respectively.  

At two separate events, the laptops were donated towards the establishment of a Computer Lab for the Accounting Department of the UGBS to complement the study of Accounting Software and other technological enhancement in the accounting space.

Presenting the laptops on behalf of the bank, Joseph Laryea Ashong, General Manager, Commercial and Retail Banking said the donation was in response to the university’s call for support towards the project, and part of the bank’s commitment to promoting quality education under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-4, Quality Education) which the bank has adopted.

“We recognise the challenges that you face in equipping students with the required logistics that will churn out the caliber of employees needed in industry and the fact that government alone cannot absorb  the full cost of tertiary education. That is why, we are here today to make this donation for the general good of the nation and also fulfilling our commitment to the sustainable development goal of quality education,” Mr. Ashong said.

Receiving the Laptops on behalf of the Accounting Department, Prof. Justice Nyigmah Bawole, the Dean of UGBS, expressed deep appreciation to Republic Bank for the kind gesture.

"I thank you very much because this is big. It is the first time we have received twenty laptops in a single donation, and we are happy".

“The computers would create a breakthrough for some young students who will heave a big sigh of relief from having to share computers with their mates” Prof. Bawole added.

Assisting Prof. Bawole to receive the laptops were Prof. William Coffie, the Head of the Accounting Department; Emmanuel Poku-Sarkodee, Registrar, University of Ghana and Saratu Salifu, Assistant Registrar, General Administration with other Heads of Departments of the University.

Representing Republic Bank were, Genevieve Aboney, Manager, Marketing and Communications; Leila Pentsil, Manager, Communications, Forster Ahiadu, Legon Branch Manager and some Relationship Managers of the bank’s Legon Branch.

At the second ceremony, the Student’s Financial Aid Office of the University of Ghana received a cheque of ¢20,000 as donation from Republic Bank to augment its operations. The office assists brilliant and needy students of the university with the objective of removing the financial barriers of these students in the attainment of their educational goals.

Pious Twum-Barima, the Southern Sector Manager of the Republic Bank, with the support of Forster S. Ahiadu, Branch Manager, Legon Branch presented the cheque to Prof. Daniel Frimpong Ofori, Provost of the College of Humanities in the presence of Madam Selina Torisson Saaka, Head of the Students’ Financial Aid Office.

The Power to Make a Difference (PMAD) is an initiative under the Corporate Social Responsibility of Republic Bank. It is built on four pillars namely, the Power to Learn, Care, Help and Succeed.
