A fire outbreak in the early hours of Wednesday, January 24, has razed numerous wooden structures utilised for residential and commercial purposes in North Suntreso, near the Bantama Baptist Church in Kumasi.
The inferno destroyed various personal items, including televisions, refrigerators, and other electronic devices.
Prompt intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service, with additional firefighting vehicles, helped prevent the escalation of the situation.
Peter Addai, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Ashanti region, mentioned in a media interview that the Komfo Anokye service station had to request reinforcements upon arrival at the scene.
“Around 2:06 am, we received a distress call reporting a fire outbreak at North Suntreso, opposite the Bantama Baptist Church, and we quickly dispatched our tender at Komfo Anokye. When we got there, the fire was well alight and had burned down eight wooden structures."
"They had to quickly call in more tenders to come and help, so we used about three fire tenders to extinguish the fire, and there were no casualties.”
While the exact cause of the fire outbreak remains undetermined, fire officers suspect that an illegal electricity connection could have been a significant factor.
DO3, therefore, cautioned the public to exercise caution when dealing with live wires and emphasised the importance of engaging certified electricians for all electrical connections.
“We want to advise that since we are still in the harmattan season, we have to be careful how we use electricity and electrical devices.
"We advise that people make genuine connections to prevent fire outbreaks. Certified electricians must be engaged in electrical connections.”
