Following the establishment of the Best African Music Performance category by the Recording Academy, organisers of the Grammy Awards, Nigerian musician Davido has said that it was only a matter of time for African music to be recognised.
In an interview with France24, the 'Unavailable' hitmaker emphasised that African music, spanning various genres, for decades has always been exceptional.
However, he noted that musicians on the continent needed opportunities to showcase their art and propel the music to new heights.
Davido highlighted the transformative impact of having a platform for African music in recent years, leading to increased interest in the continent and its culture.
“We have always been lit and for years the music has always been good. Obviously, we have never been given the opportunity to be heard or given platforms. Now you can see us on platforms, you turn your radio in New York, London, Atlanta and Paris you hear the music.”
“I always felt like if we are given the opportunity to be heard, people would love it. It is not only the music, the food, fashion and the list goes on. I am just happy that the Africans in the diaspora are proud,” the Afrobeat star added.
He believes that although African music should have gotten the recognition earlier, having the new Best African Music Performance is all God’s timing.
“And I am really happy about this new category, not just for myself but my fellow nominees. It’s very beautiful given that people back home, say African music can make it to the Grammy. That’s really amazing to see,” he added.
Davido has been nominated in three categories for the 2024 Grammy Awards. This is the first time the Nigerian artiste has been nominated for the coveted awards.
His song ‘Feel’ has been nominated for Best Global Music Performance, ‘Unavailable’ is up for Best African Music Performance and his 2023 album ‘Timeless’ is nominated for Best Global Music Album.
