The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in collaboration with road transport service providers, has unveiled TransportGhana, a digital transport system aimed at transitioning commercial road transport services from manual to digital operations.
According to NRSA, TransportGhana is an ICT interface that will facilitate the registration and licensing of road transport service providers, contributing to the enhancement of road safety and operational efficiency for both transport operators and travellers.
The platform will also be used for electronic ticketing, vehicle tracking and a host of other activities.
The application's launch mandates road transport service providers, including transport companies, transport departments of state agencies, school bus services, tyre service centres and garages, to legally register with the National Road Safety Authority.
Speaking during an engagement session between the NRSA and transport operators, the Director-General of NRSA, Ing. David Osafo Adonteng emphasised the Authority's shift towards digitalisation as a crucial step to augment road safety.
He highlighted the pressing need for such initiatives, citing the escalating number of reported road accidents and the need to address this issue.
Mr Adonteng asserted that the introduction of TransportGhana aligns with broader efforts to continually enhance road safety and elevate the quality of service within the road transport sector.
The Director for Regulations, Inspections, and Compliance at NRSA, Kwame Koduah Atuahene urged service providers to register on the platform to advance road safety.
Recognising the predominantly informal nature of the transport sector, he acknowledged the effort required to formalise it, and stressed the importance of progressing step by step.
Mr Atuahene underscored that TransportGhana aims to formalise the regulatory responsibilities of the authority and provide a comprehensive overview of the entities operating within the sector.
