A Special Aide to former President John Mahama, is advocating for the implementation of a three-shift system in Ghana to enhance employment prospects for the youth.
Joyce Bawah Mogtari stressed on the significance of accommodating the annual influx of about 1.4 million students graduating from various educational institutions by creating sustainable job opportunities.
During an interview with JoyNews on Thursday, April 4, Madam Mogtari, who previously served as Deputy Minister of Transport, critiqued the current government's employment strategy.
She believes that focusing solely on job creation in sectors like security will not meet the aspirations of young people seeking diverse employment opportunities.
“We need to do something more than what has always been done if we are going to be building an expert-driven economy, and so be it.
"Let us get all industries to feed into this perspective. Let us agree that everybody who can run the 24-hour economy system should be given certain incentives.
"Why? People come to this country to invest in affordable housing. We give them a 5-year tax holiday. Why can’t we do the same for someone who wants to build an industrial enclave in Tema?"
Mrs. Mogtari also highlighted regional disparities in the cost of living. She believes putting in place measures to get people to relocate will foster development.
She emphasised the importance of advocating for government policies that facilitate a 24-hour economy, which would not only generate more employment opportunities but also alleviate youth unemployment.
“Sometimes, we overemphasize the talk more than the action. As I told Mr. Mahama recently, 'if you were to introduce the 24-hour economy, I would go to the radio stations and demand that it be implemented in the manner in which we are advocating because you see most of the young people who are totally unengaged;.
"Underemployment is even worse, so all these top gap measures we keep offering to people, what does it bring?"
