Bonn Climate Conference has commenced today, June 3, 2024, marking the 60th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)'s Subsidiary Bodies.
Running from June 3-13, the conference started with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Chair Jim Skea, emphasising the crucial role of Just Transition pathways in achieving the Paris Agreement's objectives, during the opening dialogue.
The 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference will tackle outstanding tasks from COP28 in Dubai, driving progress on key issues and laying the groundwork for decisions at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024.
Participants, including national delegates, civil society reps, and others, will tackle pressing issues like climate finance, updated national climate plans (NDCs), transparency reports, national adaptation plans, and speeding up climate action through fair transition, among others.
The Bonn Climate Change Conference includes two key support bodies: the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). These Subsidiary Bodies (SBs) play a vital role in supporting the UNFCCC's work.
In the coming week, the IPCC will also contribute to discussions on climate change impacts on children and mountains, and participate in a workshop on gender and climate change, focusing on progress and future work under the UNFCCC Gender Action Plan.
The IPCC Task Force on Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) and the UNFCCC Secretariat will jointly host a side event on June 5, showcasing the IPCC Inventory Software as a tool for implementing the Enhanced Transparency Framework under the Paris Agreement.
On June 6, the IPCC Chair and Bureau Members will present the scientific basis of the upcoming seventh assessment cycle products and plans to strengthen engagement with IPCC Focal Points at another side event.
