A 400-meter section of Santa Maria Road, a vital thoroughfare linking Kwashiman to Sowutuom, has become a daily ordeal for commuters.
The road's deterioration, marked by potholes and cave-ins, poses significant safety risks, prompting urgent appeals for repairs and raising fears of further accidents and injuries.
Located within the Ga Central Municipality, Santa Maria Road serves as a crucial artery for commuters navigating between Kwashiman, Sowutuom, and adjacent areas.
However, the specific 400-meter stretch in front of Dunwell Methodist Church has deteriorated to a dire state.
Potholes dot the road surface, creating hazardous conditions that endanger motorists and pedestrians alike.
The deteriorated state of this segment has compelled drivers to seek alternative routes, citing the impassable conditions along this critical route.
Concern among residents and commuters is palpable, exacerbated by a string of accidents that have occurred on this stretch, resulting in injuries and fatalities.
Efforts to draw attention to the issue have intensified, with local media coverage highlighting the impassable state of Santa Maria Road and the pressing need for infrastructure improvements.
Residents have voiced their frustration and anxiety over the prolonged neglect of this vital road network, urging swift action to ensure the safety and convenience of all who rely on it.
“The road’s condition has caused all our vehicles to break down. Sometimes we don’t even have vehicles to pick up passengers, so we resort to calling buses to pick them up. Additionally, when it rains, we are unable to use the route which is a major concern.”
”We’ve reported repeatedly but our concerns are being ignored. Some even say here is the NPP World Bank, implying that our needs are being neglected.
"Drivers often try to avoid potholes but end up in other lanes, causing accidents," a resident said.
In response to mounting public pressure, local authorities are being urged to prioritise repairs and maintenance of Santa Maria Road, emphasising the critical role of adequate infrastructure in enhancing community safety and facilitating smooth transportation across the region.
