Ghana’s youngest presenter and disc jockey, Billy Ocean, is among the few radio presenters who have been able to maintain their image on the music scene for a decade or so.
Billy Ocean who is known in private life as Richmond Oduro Kwarteng is among the most popular voices on radio currently.
He is a powerful force in the game of hip hop, hiplife and R&B in Ghana and currently the host of a music video programme dubbed ‘Afrafra Hene’ on Crystal TV on Wednesdays between 5pm and 6pm and on Saturdays at 9pm.
The programme is a non-stop music video, during which he does his usual mixing of both local and foreign music videos. It is the transformation of what he does on radio into audiovisual.
He is one of the few radio presenters or DJs who can mix four music videos in three minutes and mix five songs in five minutes on radio.
On his Afrafra Hene Video Mix on Crystal TV, Billy disclosed that he would soon introduce personality interview slot where he will interview personalities in the showbiz industry and as well read text messages from viewers.
Billy Ocean told BEATWAVES that he has had a good time working on radio and that the mere mention of his name brings nostalgic memory as one of the few ones who have been able to hold their own to date.
Throughout his career, Billy has been a true player of music; that is, he proves to the listeners the unglamorous dark side to the disc jockeying life, the side that leaves one strung out, messed up and dying inside.
Billy Ocean, as he is popularly called, has a good deal of air time and anytime he is on air, he magically woos his listeners to his side until it’s all over. When Billy is on air, he could play as many songs as he can within a given period of time.
Billy started radio broadcasting in the early 1990s with Otec FM in Kumasi where he hosted the morning show and Ocean Drive for three years and later moved to Kapital Radio.
He joined Peace FM in 1999 and has since been working with the station.
Billy Ocean, who is a graduate of the Central University, had his secondary education at the Adesadel College in Cape Coast.
Born on July 16, 1972, Billy Ocean has made a name for himself as the finest radio presenter cum disc jockey in Ghana today.
Billy owns a DJ school, Ocean School for DJ, located at Caprice opposite Boomerang Night Club and Oceans Night Club near Dansoman Asoredaho.
