The Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has been given the green light to destroy 256 fertilizer sacks of dried leaves all certified to be cannabis.
Police say the destruction had become necessary due to the long period of storage leading to congestion at the Unit.
According to the Police, some of the exhibits were derelict without any suspects and others were cases in which the Attorney General had advised against prosecution and the remaining were cases in which accused persons were discharged for want of prosecution.
Moving for the order to destroy the 256 sacks of cannabis, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong informed the Court that the Police had attached the Attorney General’s advice to the application.
ASP Frimpong said the order of destruction had become necessary because of its bulky nature and that it had occupied the office space of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, CID Headquarters.
He said the Unit needed the office spaces to perform administrative work, adding cannabis not stored special silos had health implications.
The Court presided over by Isaac Addo granted the application and ordered the destruction of the cannabis under the supervision of officials from the Ghana Police Service, Narcotics Control Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, court officials and the media.
