October 16, 2024, marked World Food Day, a day set aside to raise awareness about ending hunger and ensuring that every individual has access to nutritious food.
The objective of this international campaign is to eradicate hunger, ensure food security, boost agricultural productivity, and support a sustainable food system.
This year’s celebration, under the theme “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” emphasises the importance of ensuring access to nutritious food as a foundation for a healthier and more prosperous society.
Since its inception, World Food Day has been observed in over 150 countries, making it one of the most widely celebrated events on the UN calendar. It serves as a reminder of the importance of food security and the global commitment to ending hunger.
As part of the celebration, KFC distributed its popular Streetwise Wings to over 200 children from the Nyame Dea Orphanage in East Legon, the Nungua Children’s Home, and the Teshie Orphanage.
Priscilla Adzo, Head of Digital Media Marketing at KFC Ghana, emphasized the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility in an interview with JoyNews:
“At KFC, we believe that access to nutritious food is a fundamental right. Through this donation drive, we aim to contribute to creating a healthier future for Ghana’s most vulnerable children. We are proud to celebrate World Food Day with this initiative, which reflects our brand’s commitment to giving back to the communities we serve.”
Nii Afotey Botswe II, founder of the Nungua Children’s Home, expressed his gratitude to KFC for their support:
“I believe companies are effectively engaging in their corporate social responsibility (CSR), but there is still more to be done. We need to do more to help young individuals on the streets. If care is not taken, these individuals may turn to social vices if society continues to turn a blind eye to them.”
This year's World Food Day celebration also marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security by the FAO.
