Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured Ghanaians that his next government will not tolerate bribery and corruption.
He touted the NPP's efforts in using digitalization to fight the menace.
Speaking at a stakeholders' engagement in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP government has made significant progress in the fight against corruption, adding that the party is committed to eradicating the practice through digitalization.
"Digitalization has been incredibly beneficial, especially for the poor, as it removes the need to meet someone in person who might demand a bribe. Now, people can conduct their business directly from their phones without anyone asking for a bribe."
According to him, 29,000 ghost names have been eradicated from the SSNIT payroll already, with GH₵ 400 million saved for the insurance.
This, he says was made possible with the introduction of the Ghana Card.
"I realized that ghost workers all shared one issue – they lacked fingerprints. So, I reached out to the Director General of SSNIT, Dr. Ofori, and proposed using the Ghana Card to identify these ghost workers.
"He agreed, and once we implemented the system, we identified 29,000 ghost workers on the payroll. We can now confidently say that the ghost worker issue in the public sector payroll is resolved, thanks to the Ghana Card."
He added that he intends to make corruption a thing of the past if elected president on December 7.
