The Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has touted the success of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, saying it has proven critics wrong with its positive results.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Bosomtwe, Dr. Bawumia reflected on the policy, which was launched by the NPP government in 2017.
He explained that secondary education had long been a challenge for poor families, thus, the implementation of Free SHS has reduced the burden on parents.
Among other, he also noted that the initiative would contributed to increasing Ghana's literacy rate which had previously been below average.
“Secondary education was a very difficult thing for the poor, which is why the NPP decided to implement free Senior High School. We have successfully implemented the policy and we’re seeing great results.
“Chiefs, we came not too long ago, in 2017, and we did a budget and implemented Free SHS into the budget. Today, it has been eight years since Free SHS was implemented in Ghana and 5.7 million children have benefited from the initiative," he said.
The Presidential candidate took a jibe at the opponents who were skeptical about the attainment the policy.
“We have proven our doubters wrong. The NDC didn’t believe we could do this, but here we are,” he said.
He further emphasised that his government’s efforts were far from over.
“My government will do more to improve the Free Senior High School policy and also introduce new initiatives to make it better,” he promised.
