The GIMPA Law Students Association (GLSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace and democracy with the launch of its initiative, “Peace through Democracy: The GIMPA School Pledge,” ahead of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election.

The forum, held on November 20, at the Daniel McKorley Moot Courtroom, featured speeches from key figures, emphasizing the role of law and youth leadership in safeguarding the nation’s democratic processes.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Dean of GIMPA Law School, Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, commended the GLSA for their foresight and dedication.

He underscored the significance of peaceful elections as a pillar of democracy, noting, “Elections are not merely about casting ballots; they are about upholding peace, fairness, and justice—the core values that sustain our democratic fabric.”

Dr. Agyeman-Budu also lauded the association’s initiative of producing impactful video messages from students and faculty as timely and essential.

“By amplifying the voices of young legal minds and seasoned faculty, we are sending a clear and unified message: Ghana’s democracy thrives when its people choose peace over conflict and dialogue over division,” he added.

He called on participants to approach the project with seriousness, stating that peace requires vigilance and active choice.

“Let us remember that peace is not a passive state but an active choice—one that demands vigilance, empathy, and a commitment to justice,” he urged.

Lukman Mahani Adams, President of the GLSA, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the shared responsibility of law students in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

“As law students, we are not only learners of the law but custodians of the principles that uphold justice, equity, and harmony,” he stated.
He acknowledged Ghana’s legacy as a beacon of peace in Africa while stressing the need for vigilance as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.

“The stakes are high, the emotions are charged, and the potential for discord cannot be ignored. But let us not forget that the true essence of democracy lies in constructive dialogue, respect for dissenting views, and a commitment to resolving conflicts within the boundaries of the law,” he said.
Adams urged his peers to champion peaceful dialogue, reject violence, and hold leaders accountable, reminding attendees that peacebuilding is a collective effort.

“Through the GIMPA School Pledge, we affirm our commitment to uphold peace—not only during this electoral season but as a lifelong principle,” he concluded.
The event, which featured retired ACP Dr. Benjamin Agodzo and Dr. Bossman Asare as distinguished guests, was a call to action for students, faculty, and the broader Ghanaian public to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure a peaceful election process.

The GLSA initiative is expected to contribute significantly to fostering national unity and transparency as the December 7 elections approach.
