The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, has clarified that the responsibility for security at polling stations does not fall under the mandate of the Commission.
She made this statement during a press conference held on Saturday, December 7, in response to public concerns about the presence of military officers at some polling centres.
Her comments came after media reports surfaced that military personnel had been spotted at polling stations, including the Weija ITS polling station, despite earlier assurances that security forces would not be stationed at voting centres.
Addressing the matter, Jean Mensa emphasised that the Electoral Commission's role is limited to organising free, transparent, and credible elections.
“Our primary mandate is to ensure the conduct of fair and transparent elections. Security arrangements are outside the remit of the Commission,” she stated.
She added that other institutions are responsible for deploying security personnel to maintain peace and order during elections.
Jean Mensa called on stakeholders to focus on their respective responsibilities to ensure a smooth electoral process.
She assured the public of the Commission’s commitment to upholding democratic values and delivering credible election results.
