Local miners are currently participating in the salt harvest at Ghana's Songor Lagoon, marking a significant milestone in their third season of harvesting since Electrochem Ghana Limited took over the concession. Communities within the Ada township, including Nakomkope, Bonikope, Ajumanikope, and Agbedrafor, commenced harvesting in late December 2024 using community salt pans provided by the company.

This initiative is part of Electrochem’s broader community development plan, which has delivered 70 salt production pans across seven project-affected communities as of August 2024. Currently, four communities are actively harvesting salt from their pans, while the remaining three are at various stages of completion. These facilities, provided at no cost to residents, aim to ensure sustainable livelihoods for local communities surrounding the lagoon.

In an interview, Electrochem CEO Razak Adam expressed satisfaction with the collaboration between the company and the community members. Highlighting the company's commitment to community development, Adam noted the tangible benefits of the partnership. “Proceeds from previous community pan harvests have funded renovations of community schools, among many other interventions, without relying on the district assembly,” he said.

The company’s community development initiatives, including the community salt pans and outgrower schemes, have enabled local producers to meet Electrochem’s high production standards. By providing access to quality brine and modern facilities, these programmes are strengthening economic opportunities and fostering stronger community bonds in the Ada region.
