Thousands of Ghanaians, mostly supporters and sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have gathered at the Independence Square in Accra for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.

JoyNews understands that some people arrived at the venue early on Tuesday morning, while others spent the night there to secure seats at their preferred locations.

Mr Mahama won the 2024 general election, held in December, securing the opportunity to return to the presidency.
He previously served as Vice President under the late John Evans Atta Mills, and following the death of his boss, he assumed the presidency for the remainder of that term.

In 2012, he contested and won the presidency, serving until 2016, when he lost his re-election bid to Nana Akufo-Addo.
Mr Mahama made another attempt to return in the 2020 election but was defeated again by Nana Akufo-Addo.

In the 2024 election, however, Mr Mahama won overwhelmingly with a margin of over 1.6 million votes, defeating his closest contender, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Mahama is set to be sworn into office on Tuesday, January 7, at Independence Square in Accra, alongside his running mate, Professor Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female vice president since the nation’s independence in 1957.
