The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior Secondary Schools (CHASS) says some schools may be compelled to vacate before the end of July if government continues to withhold the release of subsidies. Senior high schools are expected to vacate in the first week of August, but CHASS warns some could close as early as next week. But the National President of CHASS, Samuel Ofori Adjei said government has only paid half of the grant for the three terms in this academic year. He stressed the situation has made running of senior high schools difficult. “The few cedis that we have collected as fees have been used to pay for those items that the subsidies are supposed to be used in paying for,” Mr Adjei told Joy News. He hinted that close to 90 percent of schools would be forced to vacate earlier than schedule. While he would not establish the quantum expected by member schools, Mr Adjei said St Aquinas Senior High School, where he is headteacher, expects over GH¢25,000. He stressed that while an early vacation seems to be the only option available to them now, it must not be encouraged.
