Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has donated 250 packets of roofing sheets, equating to 5,000 individual sheets, along with ridge caps, to aid traders whose businesses were devastated by the recent fire at Kantamanto Market.
The donation, which aims to support the reconstruction efforts, was presented on his behalf by the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, and his team.
Earlier, Dr. Bawumia had already contributed GH¢200,000 to help the traders in their recovery efforts, underlining his commitment to supporting the market’s rebuilding process.
The donation of roofing materials is part of a broader effort to assist the affected traders in restoring their livelihoods and ensuring the market’s eventual return to full operation.
During a media interaction, Titus Glover stressed the importance of traders securing insurance to protect against future calamities.
He pointed out the increasing frequency of fires in the area, urging the traders to take insurance coverage seriously.
He also highlighted that security concerns are paramount, adding that Dr. Bawumia had committed to installing CCTV cameras at the market once the reconstruction is completed.
Mr Glover explained that these measures, including insurance and enhanced security, are crucial for the long-term sustainability of the market.
He referred to Dr. Bawumia’s earlier visit, where the former Vice President had emphasised the need for traders to establish strong internal security arrangements, and his pledge to provide CCTV cameras to monitor activities within the market.
The Financial Secretary of the Kantamanto Market, Yaw Sarpong, expressed deep appreciation for the generous donation of roofing sheets.
He thanked Dr. Bawumia for his continued support, recognising the significance of the contribution in helping traders rebuild their businesses and recover from the devastating fire.
