Gender activist and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Bureau, Shamima Muslim, has highlighted that President John Dramani Mahama is on track to fulfil his pledge of appointing 60 ministers.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile, she emphasised that President Mahama is committed to establishing a government that reflects Ghana’s diversity, with a particular focus on gender equality, youth involvement, and experienced leadership.
Shamima Muslim pointed out that one of the key elements of President Mahama’s pledge is ensuring that at least 30% of ministerial positions are occupied by women.
Currently, 28% of the cabinet positions have been filled by women, which she regarded as a significant achievement. “It’s not shabby at all,” she said, expressing confidence that the percentage will continue to rise as more appointments are made, particularly in State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and other critical government agencies.
She believes these appointments will help create a more inclusive and dynamic government, ultimately benefiting the country.
In line with his commitment to building a more representative government, she quoted President Mahama, who had previously stated, “I am determined to build the most representative government Ghana has ever had, one that includes women, youth, and experienced leaders who can drive change.”
She reiterated that this focus on inclusivity is central to his vision for the country.
She added that by ensuring his government is both diverse and competent, the President is positioning Ghana for greater progress and success.
Beyond diversity, Shamima Muslim underscored the President’s promise to ensure accountability among his appointees. She referenced the NDC's manifesto, which enforces Mr Mahama's commitment to hold all members of his administration to the highest standards of conduct.
He has committed to introducing a public conduct and standards policy, ensuring that no one in his government will be exempt from scrutiny. She reminded the public that during Mahama’s previous term, several members of his administration faced legal consequences for misconduct, underlining his commitment to accountability.
Regarding the ongoing vetting process, Madam Muslim noted that it has showcased the President’s emphasis on competence and experience.
Many of the appointees bring a wealth of experience from both government and opposition, which she believes will be invaluable in ensuring effective governance and providing the stability needed for a successful administration.
Madam Muslim expressed her unwavering confidence that President Mahama’s cabinet, once fully formed, will serve as a testament to his commitment to inclusivity, professionalism, and accountability.
