Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced plans to write to the newly appointed Attorney General and Minister for Justice to seek guidance on the next steps for the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
In a speech to the Ghanaian community in Côte d'Ivoire on January 26, 2025, Bagbin reiterated his commitment to ensuring the passage of the controversial bill. The bill was previously approved by Parliament but failed to receive presidential assent under former President Akufo-Addo.
Speaker Bagbin criticised the former president’s refusal to assent to the bill, calling it unconstitutional.
“The LGBTQ+ bill was passed by Parliament, but the former president refused to assent to it, which was unconstitutional. The president has no right to withhold assent to a bill passed by Parliament,” Bagbin stated, emphasising the authority of Parliament in the legislative process. “That decision was wrong, and many of you rightly condemned him for it.”
The Speaker further expressed his firm resolve to secure the bill’s passage this year, describing it as a critical matter of faith and national importance.
“I will be writing to the new Attorney General and Minister for Justice for his input so that we can resend the bill to the new president for assent. It will not take long; we will pass it this year. This is anti-God, and I am prepared to go to any lengths for this cause. No one should underestimate me on this,” Bagbin declared.
