The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has denied accusations linking its staff to a fire outbreak at a residential facility in Two-Streams, Koforidua.
In a statement issued on 25th January, 2025, ECG described the claims as “completely false” and urged the public to disregard them.
The allegations surfaced after ECG staff disconnected a customer for non-payment of bills amounting to GHȼ6,519.38, which had been overdue since September 2024. As part of the company’s ongoing revenue mobilisation campaign “Operation Keep the Lights On,” the disconnection was carried out on 24th January, 2025.
According to ECG, during the exercise, the customer had illegally reconnected their power supply and resisted further disconnection efforts.
“The customer resisted the disconnection and threatened the ECG staff with a machete,” the statement revealed. Police were called to the scene, and the facility was disconnected directly from the pole in the presence of law enforcement officers.
The fire outbreak, however, occurred hours after the ECG team had left the area. ECG stressed that disconnecting power supply directly from a pole completely cuts electricity to the premises and “CANNOT, by any means, result in a fire outbreak.”
“Disconnection has been part of our operations, backed by law, to ensure that recalcitrant customers pay for the electricity they consume,”
The company reiterated its commitment to customer safety and advised the public to promptly pay their electricity bills and avoid illegal connections, which are not only criminal but also pose safety risks.
