Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has reaffirmed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) unwavering position on the Anti-Gay Bill, stating that the party’s stance has remained consistent since the elections.

His remarks came in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent suggestion that a government-sponsored bill might be more effective than the current Private Member’s Bill.

President Mahama argued that such a move would enable broader consultations and help build stronger national consensus on the issue.

During a meeting with the Bishops on Tuesday, 14 January, President Mahama also highlighted the need to revise the school curriculum to incorporate moral and cultural education, aimed at promoting Ghanaian and African values among young learners.

Speaking to Channel One TV on Monday, 27 January, Mahama Ayariga clarified that legislative proposals or agreements not finalised within a particular Parliament’s term are generally considered to have lapsed, along with the administration of the president under whom they were introduced.

He reiterated the NDC’s steadfast support for the Anti-Gay Bill, dismissing any suggestion of a shift in the party’s position.

“No, there has been no change in our stance. The question now is whether we can simply sign and pass it into law. Would it be recognised as proper legislation, or might the process be challenged on the grounds that its validity expired with the previous Parliament?”
