Thirty African Heads of State, including Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, have pledged to enhance access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity in their respective nations.
The commitment was made during the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit held in Tanzania, an initiative designed to connect 300 million Africans to electricity within the next six years.
The summit, hosted by the United Republic of Tanzania, was organised in collaboration with the African Union (AU), the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), and the World Bank Group.
The high-level gathering provided a platform for leaders to deliberate on strategies for improving energy access across the continent.
Addressing Ghana’s own energy challenges, President Mahama underscored the country’s ongoing efforts to stabilise and enhance its power supply.
Upon his return to Ghana, Acting Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu briefed the media, reaffirming the government’s dedication to resolving energy-related issues.
“The objective of the summit was to explore ways of extending electricity access to underserved areas across Africa. The Heads of State convened following a prior meeting of various ministers from different African nations, where each leader reiterated their commitment to ensuring this goal is achieved in their respective countries,” he stated.
Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that President Mahama had shared Ghana’s experiences with fellow African leaders, offering valuable insights into tackling persistent electricity crises.
“President Mahama recounted Ghana’s experiences and outlined the strategies implemented to address our recurring energy challenges.
He also cautioned against repeating past mistakes and reaffirmed his commitment to expanding electricity access for more citizens,” he added.
