The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced plans to host a high-level conference on responsible mining in June 2025.
The event will bring together world leaders from the World Gold Council and the World Bank to address the challenges and opportunities within the mining sector.
The conference aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to share best practices, discuss challenges, and explore innovative solutions to ensure mining activities are carried out responsibly and sustainably.
The Asantehene has been a strong advocate for responsible mining practices, particularly in response to the growing issue of illegal mining in Ghana.
He has called for a multi-faceted approach to tackle the problem, which includes the deployment of security personnel, the regularisation of small-scale mining operations, and the provision of alternative livelihoods for those engaged in illegal mining.
During a meeting with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, the Asantehene revealed that the conference is expected to attract a high-level delegation of experts and leaders from the mining industry.
"I have decided to host the Responsible Mining Conference in June, which will bring together some of the world's leading experts and thought leaders in the mining sector. I have already invited the World Gold Council and the World Bank," he said.
“I believe that responsible mining is essential for sustainable development, and we need to find solutions to address the challenges we face," he added.
The conference is expected to focus on sustainable mining practices.
