Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has raised concerns over Ghana’s current economic and social struggles, describing the nation as being at its lowest point.

However, he believes President John Dramani Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) has rekindled hope for a national revival.

Delivering his first SONA in Parliament on Thursday, 27th February, President Mahama outlined his administration’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s struggling economy and tackling pressing challenges.

Following the address, Mr Bagbin took to Facebook to reflect on the country’s condition, lamenting the extent of its economic decline.

“Clearly, our country is not in good shape. The decay is massive. Ghana, an African icon, is at our lowest point,” he stated, stressing the severity of the situation.

Despite this, he found encouragement in Mahama’s speech, saying, “But the address of President John Dramani Mahama is rejuvenating. It’s stimulating confidence about quick recovery, resetting, and restoration to a more rewarding investment climate and social justice.”

A strong advocate for persons with disabilities, Mr Bagbin also praised the government’s decision to make tertiary education free for individuals classified as disabled.

“As a passionate advocate for persons with disabilities, I am particularly happy about the bold move of the Government to make tertiary education free for persons considered disabled. God bless our dear nation Ghana!” he stated, welcoming the policy as a step towards greater inclusion and equal opportunities.
