The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, marked this year’s May Day by cutting sod for two brand-new three-unit classroom blocks in the rural communities of Alorkpa and Glikpome.
Accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive, Daniel Dagba, and the Municipal Director of Education, Karim Ayaana Umar, Mr Ahiafor's May Day activities were met with widespread jubilation and heartfelt gratitude from residents, traditional leaders, and education stakeholders.
The ceremony at Alorkpa was a vibrant display of community spirit as chiefs, elders, youth, and opinion leaders gathered to witness what many described as a “timely and transformative intervention.”
Amid cheers and traditional drumming, community leaders thanked Mr Ahiafor for his relentless advocacy for rural development and specifically his longstanding dedication to education.
The chiefs of Alorkpa, while commending the MP’s consistent support, also appealed for urgent intervention to complete the community’s stalled electrification project.
In a swift and decisive response that drew applause from the crowd, Mr Ahiafor publicly instructed the contractor responsible for the electrification works, Mr. Asanka, to return to the site and resume operations immediately.
Later in the day, a similar sod-cutting ceremony took place in Glikpome, where residents were equally elated by the MP’s efforts to uplift education in the area.
Addressing the gathering, Daniel Dagba, the MCE, emphasised the importance of community ownership and maintenance of the upcoming school blocks.
“Let us see this not just as government property, but our property. Let’s preserve it for future generations,” he urged.
Mr. Karim Ayaana Umar, the Municipal Director of Education, highlighted the far-reaching impact the classroom projects will have.
“When completed, these facilities will significantly ease overcrowding, create a conducive learning environment, and boost academic performance,” he stated.
