The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, Monday, 26 May 2025.
The outspoken politician's appearance follows an unsuccessful attempt by a joint team of National Security operatives and police officers to arrest him at his residence on Friday, 23rd May.
The attempted arrest drew tens of NPP supporters, who massed up at Chairman Wontumi’s residence in protest.
As the crowd swelled throughout the morning, many condemned the deployment of heavily armed security personnel who had surrounded the premises, questioning the motive behind the operation.
Although the reason for the attempted arrest has not been made public, Chairman Wontumi is reported to have assured the officers of his willingness to comply with the invitation.
He is said to have agreed to present himself to the CID voluntarily on the date specified.
Speaking to Citi News, Wontumi’s legal counsel, Kwame Adom Appiah, reaffirmed their readiness to cooperate with the police.
“We are practising democracy. Wontumi is not someone who can hide from the cameras. He is not someone who is going to run away. He has investments in Ghana, and he is not going to go anywhere. If you want him any time or day, you are going to get him,” he stated.
“We have not done anything criminal, and we are not afraid of getting to them,” he added.
In response to public criticism of the attempted arrest, the Deputy Interior Minister, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, defended the actions of the security agencies, insisting that their approach was within the bounds of their mandate.
