An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 19-year-old unemployed Rashid Aziz to 24 months imprisonment for conspiracy, unlawful entry, and stealing.
Aziz pleaded guilty to the charges, while his accomplice, 20-year-old Nelson Godwin Ezel, denied them and was remanded into police custody to reappear on June 11, 2025.
The pair allegedly stole an iPhone 11 Pro Max valued at GH¢5,500, a Samsung tablet worth GH¢1,200, jewellery valued at GH¢3,000, and GH¢3,000 in cash after breaking into the complainant’s room at dawn in Madina on May 15, 2025.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, said the complainant, Fati Ahmed, a trader residing in Madina, discovered the theft at 0450 hours.
She contacted her brother, Abdul Rashid, who helped track the stolen iPhone to a repair shop in Korle Bu, where the repairer revealed that a young man had brought it in for unlocking.
The young man and the phone were handed over to the complainant, who reported the case to the Nima Police Station.
During investigations, the young man named Aziz and Ezel as those who gave him the iPhone to unlock, but they were initially untraceable.
Later, the police received information that the two suspects had been arrested with the stolen items and were handed over to the James Town Police Station.
At James Town, the young man identified Aziz and Ezel as those who had given him the phone.
The prosecution said the accused persons admitted the offences in their caution statements, explaining that they had no money for transport back to Agbogbloshie and broke into the complainant’s room to get money for their fare.
The court, presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, convicted Aziz and sentenced him to 24 months' imprisonment.
