Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has cast doubt on the ability of the Mahama-led administration to confront the illegal mining menace, commonly referred to as galamsey.
He made the remarks on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, June 21, where he criticised the government's commitment and capacity to address the issue.
Haruna described the current government as a "settings government", suggesting that its approach to national challenges is more about appearances than substance.
He insisted that when it comes to the fight against galamsey, the Mahama administration lacks the necessary resolve and authority.
“One thing that is clear to everyone is that this government that we have described as a settings government certainly doesn't have the gravitas to deal with this galamsey menace,” he stated during the discussion.
His comments come amid growing public concern over the environmental and economic impact of illegal mining.
The NPP executive argued that combating galamsey requires not just policy declarations, but firm and decisive action, which, according to him, the Mahama government has repeatedly failed to demonstrate.
