The bid of former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, to contest the flagbearership race of the New Patriotic Party is gaining momentum in the Ashanti Region.

Already, some traders at the Railway Market in Kumasi have thrown their support behind the former Minister.

The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency has officially declared his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position for the 2028 election.

The declaration has received widespread commendation, with the market women being the latest to solicit support for the lawmaker.

At a press conference, one of the traders, Adwoa Animah, said "though the former Minister has not been in politics for long, he has distinguished himself in service."

Already, the NPP presidential candidate for the 2024 General Election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who served as Vice President under the Akufo-Addo administration, is in the race to be re-elected.

Other personalities like Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong have declared intentions to contest.

The party has set the Presidential primaries for Saturday, 31st January 2026.

Stewardship as Education Minister

Under Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term as President, the Free Senior High School program was introduced with Dr. Adutwum as Deputy Minister.

For the first term, he remained instrumental in ensuring the attainment of the President’s objective.

He assumed the role of Minister in the government’s second term, overseeing the program when students’ population had increased.

Under his watch as Minister, Technical and Vocational Education and Training became an area of interest for the government.

In this period, some innovations were implemented to revamp the TVET sector, including the introduction of various career pathways such as Pre-Engineering courses for Non-Science students.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) schools were also built across the country.

New science laboratories were constructed to complement the existing ones in second-cycle institutions, while new schools and the construction of hundreds of Model KG’s across all regions in the country.

Before exiting power, 80 educational projects were inaugurated on the same day, across all 16 regions.

The facilities are aimed at improving access to quality education and providing modern facilities.

These projects included STEM-focused schools, E-blocks, and kindergarten facilities.

Meanwhile, in his capacity as MP for Bosomtwe Constituency, Dr. Osei Adutwum instituted a scholarship scheme for students in the Engineering and Medical fields.

61 students received the gesture in its first year which was the 2022 academic year.
