Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kusaug Traditional Area have strongly condemned the burning of the Bawku Naba’s statue, describing the act as a deliberate provocation and a declaration of war against the people of Kusaug.
At a press conference on Tuesday, July 15, the constituency leaders alleged that the attack—carried out on July 13—was part of a coordinated assault, reportedly involving armed individuals of Mamprusi origin accompanied by military escorts.
“This government has not only failed to protect our people but has desecrated the image of our revered overlord, His Royal Majesty Zugraan Bawku Naba, by setting ablaze his statue—an act that is provocative and amounts to a declaration of war,” the executives declared.
The group accused the government of inaction and complicity, warning that such acts were intensifying tensions in an already volatile region.
They further criticised the government’s approach to resolving the protracted Bawku chieftaincy dispute, describing it as ineffective and politically motivated.
“Instead of taking bold and lawful measures to resolve the chieftaincy issue, the government has outsourced responsibility to the Asantehene while perpetrators of violence walk free,” they said.
According to the executives, the destruction of the statue has deepened the perception among Kusaug residents that justice is being sacrificed for political convenience.
“This crisis has fuelled the growing perception that the government has chosen political expedience over justice,” they cautioned.
The NDC leaders called for immediate action to restore calm and prevent further escalation, warning that continued tolerance of such attacks could plunge the region into deeper conflict.
