Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that several of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) flagship health sector pledges were the brainchild of the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, August 11, Mr Ablakwa described Dr Omane Boamah as a pivotal strategist for President John Mahama during the party’s years in opposition from 2017 to 2024.
“Many people are unaware that a significant number of the health sector commitments in the NDC manifesto were his ideas,” Mr Ablakwa revealed.
He cited policies such as free primary health care and the *MahamaCares* initiative, noting that these proposals were conceived by Dr Omane Boamah and warmly embraced by the Ghanaian public.
“He was a formidable strategist for President Mahama throughout the opposition period,” Mr Ablakwa added.
The late Defence Minister, who perished in the 6 August military helicopter crash, is remembered for his policy ingenuity and political acumen, which continue to shape the NDC’s governance vision.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, 6 August, claimed the lives of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.
