The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and other commercial transport operators have issued a one-week ultimatum to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to repair the deteriorating Pokuase–Nsawam road or face a nationwide protest.
According to the operators, the road’s deplorable state has made it nearly impassable, endangering motorists, commuters, and residents along the stretch.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 14, they cautioned that the situation is driving up operational costs due to frequent vehicle repairs, shortened vehicle lifespans, and increased spare part replacements.
“This is not just a challenge for commercial transport operators, but for all motorists using this critical corridor to Eastern, Ashanti, and other northern regions,” part of the statement read.
“It is disrupting daily life and economic activities.”
According to the group, a recent meeting with the Minister for Roads and Highways ended with a promise to fix the road within six weeks, but that timeline has since elapsed without any visible progress.
The operators are demanding that the ministry make the repairs a top priority, warning that "If no meaningful action is taken within one week, the GPRTU of TUC, GRTCC and other commercial transport operators will park our vehicles and embark on a protest against the government till our concerns are addressed."
They also called on all affected motorists, commuters, and residents to join the protest, describing it as a civic duty to compel authorities to act.
