The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly has announced plans to embark on a fresh decongestion exercise at the Agbogbloshie onion market in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service.
The site, once notorious as one of the world’s dirtiest e-waste dumpsites due to the burning of electronic waste, was cleared on 1 July 2021 when the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, backed by armed police, demolished structures and removed about 10,000 scrap dealers.
Part of the land was later allocated for the construction of a district hospital under the government’s Agenda 111 project.
However, four years on, scrap dealers have resurfaced, reclaiming portions of the land and reigniting concerns over environmental degradation and public health hazards.
Speaking at a meeting with the Greater Accra Regional Minister and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on Thursday, August 28, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ablekuma Central, Frank Nkansah, described the situation as alarming and pledged swift intervention.
“Together with the regional minister, we have decided to decongest the Agbogbloshie onion site again. She has given us a representative, and the IGP has also provided a team to work with,” Mr Nkansah stated.
He further revealed that in two weeks, the Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service, will extend a clean-up operation to the South Industrial Area.
