The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has assured the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, that government will take every step necessary to restore peace in the Sawla-Bole area, which has in recent weeks been gripped by violent clashes.
Speaking to the media after a closed-door engagement at the Jakpa Palace in Damongo, the minister expressed government’s concern about the loss of lives and property, while emphasising the importance of collaboration among traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and security agencies.
“We have taken note of all the concerns and we have also assured him that we will do everything humanly possible to ensure that peace will be restored. But we need his cooperation and the cooperation of all others. Surely, what talking can solve, dance cannot solve,” he stated.
He stressed that dialogue and cooperation were the most effective tools to resolve disputes, adding that government would implement its share of the agreements reached, with the hope that all parties would also adhere to their commitments.
The meeting follows renewed tensions in Sawla-Bole, which have displaced scores of residents and threatened stability in the Savannah Region. The minister reaffirmed that restoring calm and law and order remains a top priority.
"Surely, what talking can solve, dance cannot solve, so we are hoping that after all the lengthy discussion, the conclusion that we have come to, we will go and implement our part, we are hopeful that they will also listen to us and also adhere to the whatever agreement that we’ve had," he noted.
