Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Communications Director of the Bawumia Campaign, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of hypocrisy in his stance on hate speech and free expression.
Speaking on JoyNews’s Newsfile programme on Saturday, September 13, he described the arrest of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (popularly known as Abronye DC), as a clear case of political witch-hunting.
“The President cannot create multiple forms of Kevin Taylor, nurture them, benefit from them and when the time comes to harvest them, you start to complain,” Mr Aboagye argued.
He said that any attempt by government to legislate restrictions on speech would be politically motivated, insisting that it risked undermining democratic freedoms.
His comments come against the backdrop of President Mahama’s recent announcement that the government has deployed a system to track individuals who use social media to spread hate.
According to the President, the National Signals Bureau (NSB) has been equipped with new technology capable of tracing the IP addresses of devices to identify the sources of such content.
Mr Aboagye, however, cautioned against overreach, saying: “When you try to legislate against speech simply because it does not favour you, then you are not protecting democracy — you are shrinking it.”
He urged Ghanaians to see Abronye’s case as part of a broader contest over free speech and political fairness.
