A communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, has proposed a comprehensive strategy to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey”, in Ghana.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM show today, September 16, she emphasised the need to balance environmental protection with the livelihoods of small-scale miners.
Illegal mining has taken centre stage in public discourse due to the detrimental impact on the environment.
Despite interventions from current and previous governments, the menace has persisted, with several experts demanding action from President John Dramani Mahama.
As the debate unfolds, Dr Amoakoh has outlined some solutions from the NPP that could prove useful.
Her approach focuses on a comprehensive plan to cover multiple aspects of illegal mining, with each point targeting a specific challenge, from funding and licensing to environmental protection and community oversight.
Dr. Amoakoh also criticised President John Mahama's inability to deal with the situation, stating, “It was a big scam, and their own people have taken it up in the most irresponsible way possible. The people of Ghana are going to get tired of it.”
