A giant coconut, which weighs 7 kilograms, has been found in Ngleshie Amanfro, in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

Significantly heavier than the average coconut, which typically weighs between 1.5 to 3 kilograms (3.3 to 6.6 pounds), this exceptional coconut has attracted attention for its size and unique shape, described as elongated, curvy, oval, smooth, firm, and light to olive green in colour.

Weighing 7 kilograms, which is almost three times the price of regular coconuts, the natural refreshment beverage was brought by a coconut distributor from Bontrasi in the Awutu Senya District, Central Region.

The hybrid coconut variety is relatively new to the market, though it's large, but far from the world's largest coconut, the Coco de Mer, which can weigh up to 42 kg. Tall varieties can grow up to 100 feet tall, producing large coconuts.

Obviously, dwarf varieties are smaller trees, producing smaller coconuts that are often preferred for convenience, known for high sugar content and orange colour.

According to the seller, Suley Mohammed, those coconuts are very admirable, so he used them to attract customers, adding that some people come to take a selfie with them due to their appealing shape.

A media practitioner, Nana Konadu Agyemang, who doubles as a farmer, said that type of coconut is a hybrid that came into the system not long ago.

He disclosed that he has started harvesting his first fruits in the Eastern Region.

Agnes Arthur, who came to see the coconut, said that it was her friend who told her that the coconut seller was selling a giant coconut that nobody had seen before, so she rushed to see what it was.

Mr Akpaloo, a farmer, said the size of the coconut looks deceptive, as it may only provide small food.

A background revealed that the largest coconut variety in the world, weighing up to 42 kg, is found in Seychelles in Africa.

The discovery of this giant coconut highlights the diversity of coconut varieties and the potential for exceptional growth in certain conditions.
