Aburaso, a community along the Bechem–Kumasi Highway, was thrown into a state of grief on Tuesday afternoon, October 28, when a heavy-duty truck loaded with lumber lost control and killed a pupil.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that the deceased, who is yet to be identified, was returning home from school with two other pupils, both reported to be in critical condition, when the incident occurred around 1400 hours.
A resident and eyewitness, Mr. Evans Owusu, told the GNA in a telephone interview that the driver of the truck, with registration number GE 9901-11, lost control, causing the lumber to fall from the truck’s bucket and trap the children.
He said some young men in the area quickly mobilised to rescue the victims, only to discover that one of them had died. The two surviving victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As of the time of filing this report, Mr. Owusu said the truck had blocked the Aburaso section of the highway, resulting in heavy vehicular traffic as vehicles from both directions were unable to move.
He added that several passengers were stranded, while the truck driver and his mate escaped unhurt and fled the scene.
