A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Joshua Zaato, has expressed concern that the manner in which former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was removed from office could set an unhealthy precedent for future governments.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Thursday during a discussion on the controversies surrounding the judiciary, Dr Zaato stated that the development risks normalising politically influenced removals of heads of arms of government.
"My fear is this, right now, any government of Ghana, coming in, will bring their own Chief Justice. I arrived at this because nobody will forget it, in fact, the grassroots of the NDC love this so much and the grassroots of the NPP hate it so much," he said.
"Any president who comes and doesn't go by this, your own grassroots will chase you out of the Jubilee House," he opined.
He noted that such a trend could undermine judicial independence and weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.
"On the contrary, I thought that it is impossible to remove a Chief Justice, but the process has taught me that it is so easy, so simple to do it and go," he added.
